Hammond students participated in The Hour of Code as part of National Computer Science Education Week held December 9-15.  Across the country, students from kindergarten through 12th grade are learning computer coding as part of this nationwide campaign featuring tutorials by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft titan Bill Gates designed to engage students interested in computer science.

“The Hour of Code is designed to demystify code, to show that computer science is not rocket-science, and anybody can learn the basics," said Hadi Partovi, founder and CEO of Code.org. "It’s now on track to be the largest learning event in history, proving that the demand for relevant 21st century computer science education crosses all borders and knows no boundaries."

As a one-to-one iPad school, Hammond is well prepared to participate in this project that offers lessons in computer coding aimed at every age group and accessible on a wide range of computing devices.  Throughout the week, Hammond students in grades pk-12 were introduced to coding by representatives from Intel and guided through the process of coding to create games and other programming projects.

Fifth grader Mae Williams and sixth graders Graydon Davies, Federica Hall, Janie Hammersla, Tobi OgunFowora and Hannah Velilla  represented Hammond School in the 2014 South Carolina Elementary Honor Choir in North Charleston. These talented singers were selected by audition in October from a pool of nearly 500 fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students representing roughly 100 participating schools across South Carolina. Under the direction of Cristi Cary Miller, a nationally known clinician, the students rehearsed in North Charleston Thursday and Friday and performed for the public on Saturday at the Charleston Area Convention Center. The outstanding program contained choral music sung in Latin and English and covered styles from folk to gospel. Congratulations to these talented students and to Mr. Eben Trobaugh for preparing the students for the auditions and performance.

Sixteen graduate engineering students from ENCP, a prestigious university in Paris, came to Hammond for an afternoon visit with upper-level French students. They enjoyed lunch in the French classroom, took a tour of the campus, and chatted with Hammond French students in small groups. This is the third year that Dr. Lara Lomicka Anderson, French professor at USC, has chosen Hammond for both the high school visit and a year-long, collaborative project using social media. There were smiles all around as they tasted chocolate and other treats from the City of Lights. Such a great day of cross-cultural learning for everyone! Parlez-vous français?
